Goodwill Receives Million Dollar Grant for Ex-Offender Program

(New Orleans, La.) Goodwill Industries® of Southeastern Louisiana, Inc. (Goodwill) has been awarded a $1.025 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to help formerly incarcerated adults return to work after their release from prison.

Goodwill’s program was the only one awarded in the State of Louisiana. Eighteen organizations nationwide received funding from the $20.5 million allocation—which represented the latest round of funding issued under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Reintegration of Ex-Offenders-Adults Program.

Goodwill’s ex-offender program consists of occupational training, mentoring and assistance in connecting ex-offenders with supportive services such as housing, substance abuse programs and mental health treatment.

Goodwill will train approximately 250-300 ex-offenders in one of three high demand industries: broadband technology; culinary arts; and bio-diesel training. Each training program will last approximately 10 months with ex-offenders completing the specified training, mentoring program, soft skills and work ethics training simultaneously.

Statistics from the Louisiana Department of Corrections show that approximately 12,000 prisoners were released from Louisiana’s jails last year. Research has proven that, without assistance to make a successful transition, the majority of former offenders return to a life of crime. Programs like Goodwill’s aims to break that cycle.
